As an esteemed dance and music critic championing the likes of Anna Pavlova, Isadora Duncan, Igor Stravinsky, and George Gershwin, Carl Van Vechten was a prominent figure in the arts and cultural scene of the 1920s and 30s. Most remembered for his literary achievements as a chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance and the executor of Gertrude Stein’s estate, Van Vechten used his associations with the celebrities of his era to exercise his hobby of portrait photography. Eugene and Carlotta O’Neill were among the many prestigious personalities that Van Vechten’s camera fell upon and, in March 1936, Van Vechten visited the O’Neills’ Sea Island cottage, where he photographed the couple, their guests, and the surrounding environs.
