O’Neill’s only formal training in the writing of plays came in the form of Professor George Pierce Baker’s “47 Workshop” at Harvard in 1914. Harvard’s neglect to develop its drama program led Professor Baker to Yale University, where he later influenced the administration to grant O’Neill with an honorary degree in 1926. Baker eventually charmed Carlotta into starting an O’Neill collection, which remains today at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library.

The photographs reproduced here are sourced from the Eugene O’Neill Papers in the Yale Collection of American Literature. The images were found at the Beinecke library in various folders or pasted into the front of Carlotta’s diaries. The photographer(s) for these images is unknown but one can presume that the couple lovingly photographed themselves.
